Sir William Hingston, 1829-1907: Montreal Mayor, Surgeon and Banker

Author: Alan Hustak
€2.50
Sir William Hingston was a prominent surgeon and mayor of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. As mayor, he lobbied for important municipal causes and worked to bridge the gap between Montreal's sometimes warring ethnic and religious communities. As a surgeon, he pioneered many new techniques and championed important new practices (e.g. smallpox vaccination). He was also an important medical educator, banker and, eventually, a Canadian senator. It is impossible to imagine what the University of Montreal, the Laurentian Bank of Canada or the city of Montreal would be without his influence. Alan Hustak captures the man, his family and the times.
